Two candidates filed to run for Homer Mayor (today) Monday. Former Homer City Council member David Lewis and founding member of the Homer Foundation Ken Castner are both running for current Mayor Bryan Zak’s seat.

Lewis is a former teacher who served on the Homer City Council for nine years. Lewis also ran against Zak in the 2016 mayoral race. Lewis left the council last year, and he says community members asked him to run.

Castner has served on several city task forces and committees. He’s had a hand in the design of the Homer Public Library, water and sewer rate structures and worked on the first iteration of the Police Station Building Task Force.

Castner also sued the city back in 1977 over its residency requirement for elected officials.

Both men say they decided to run because Mayor Zak might not run for re-election. Zak previously told KBBI that he planned to run for a second term, but he said today (Monday) that he’s undecided due to health issues. The window to file for two seats on the Homer City Council and Homer Mayor will close Wednesday.

Aaron Bolton has moved on to a new position in Montana; he is no longer KBBI News Director. KBBI is currently seeking a News Director, and Kathleen Gustafson is filling in for the time being.
