Homer’s skateboarders can now ride in style. That’s because members of the Homer Elks Lodge and a handful of volunteers spent hours Saturday refurbishing the Homer Education and Recreation Complex’s skate park.
Elks Lodge member Dylan Weiser said the park needed some attention
"The paint had been chipping, some of the asphalt had sunk down a little bit which created a little bit of a danger when you're trying to get up and down the ramps there," he said. "So the first step was cleaning off some of the old paint, and then getting fresh paint on the decks and the sides. Then we are also going to come through with a little chip crete and asphalt to smooth things out."
The volunteers finished sprucing up most of the park on Saturday but stopped short because of the rain. They plan to complete the last part of the project this upcoming weekend.
Weiser added that the project was made possible by a $2,000 grant from the Elks National Foundation.
"Really we just hope kids get to enjoy it, that’s the ultimate goal," he said. "I think driving by and just seeing kids skating and having fun is the reward that we're looking for."
