Deb Lowney to run for Homer City Council

Another candidate has filed for one of two seats that will be open on the Homer City Council in October. Deb Lowney filed her paperwork Friday.

This is Lowney’s first run for city council. She currently sits on the Homer Education and Recreation Complex Task Force, the Bunnell Street Arts Center’s board of directors and chairs the Homer Parks, Art, Recreation and Culture Advisory Commission. Lowney has also been a member of other city work groups in the past.

She’s lived in Homer for 38 years and is a former Homer Middle School teacher. Lowney says her interest in making Homer a walkable city and the HERC building spurred her to run this year.

Lowney is the second candidate to file for office. Current council member Donna Aderhold filed for re-election earlier this week. Council member Heath Smith’s term will also end this election cycle. Smith told KBBI he is undecided whether he will run for a second term. Mayor Bryan Zak, who’s seat is also up for grabs, has said he plans to run for re-election. The window for candidates to file will remain open until Aug. 15.

Aaron Bolton has moved on to a new position in Montana; he is no longer KBBI News Director. KBBI is currently seeking a News Director, and Kathleen Gustafson is filling in for the time being.
