City Council profile: Dwayne Nustvoldt

Dwayne Nustvoldt Jr. is running for a spot on the Homer City Council and has been living in Homer on and off for 20 years. The former businessman has new ideas for improving the homer economy while maintaining conservative values.

“My main goal is to bring infrastructure here,” Nustvoldt says.

Nustvoldt has owned companies in asphalt, trucking, and landscaping.  He takes pride in his ability to outcompete with chain stores and wants to use his skillset on improving Homer’s harbor.

“People say that this is where the road ends and the sea begins, but we have the opportunity to make this where the road begins, bringing products in that we can ship to Kenai and Soldotna,” Nustvold explained. “We are closer to Anchorage, and I think we can be competitive that way.”

Nustvoldt is not only concerned with the sea. He has ambitions to develop Homer’s trucking industry, which could mean more jobs.

“We have 1,600 wage-earning people in Homer and I’d like to see that go over 2,000, go up 20 percent at least and bring that tax revenue,” he says.

Nustvoldt hopes to accomplish this by expanding Homer’s trucking industry.

As far as plans for the new police station, Nustvoldt was less clear in his objectives.

“I‘ve read some stories down in California where the city went bankrupt, and they got rid of all their police officers except for the chief, and I don’t want to see that,” Nustvoldt states. “I want to make sure we have a good enough plan, that we can cover them bills.”

When asked what type of city council he wants to see, Nustvoldt shared his values on social issues.

“I’m a conservative. It’s not that I don’t vote democratic. I’d like to see values, families. I’d like to see families growing stronger,” Nustvoldt says.

To work towards this, Nustvoldt wants to maintain Homer as a safe environment by working with the police. The election for city council will take place on Tuesday Oct 3.  Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
