The Alaska Training Room opened its doors last year and has quickly become a favored spot among Homer exercise enthusiasts.

Eight months ago, Mary Jo Cambridge brought 25 years of experience in physical fitness training to Homer in the form of the Alaska Training Room. While it contains many features of a traditional gym, Cambridge describes it as a circuit training gym.

"I only offer classes in strength and conditioning that you can do in a group," said Cambridge.

Cambridge says that she first got into the practice of physical fitness following an injury. She says she was inspired by the ability her personal trainer had to bring back her health and vitality.

She has since helped many athletes at both the junior and senior levels. One such athlete is professional tennis player Sloane Stephens who recently competed in the Australian Open and is currently ranked Number 17 in the World. Cambridge is certainly excited for Sloane’s success but she doesn’t seem that surprised by it.

"It's so exciting ... we worked on her power, her explosiveness ... we knew she had the potential," said Cambridge.

While it’s still less than a year old at this point, the Alaska Training Room is fast becoming a popular spot for the Homer health-conscious. With classes offered every day at all levels of physical experience, Cambridge says she is overwhelmed by the support she has received from the community.
