Homer Teacher Awarded 'Golden Apple'

Aaron Selbig

A Homer educator is this year’s recipient of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District’s “Golden Apple Award.”

Sara Reinert (RYE-nert) is a math professor at the Kachemak Bay Campus of Kenai Peninsula College. Eight years ago, she brought her passion for math to Homer Middle School, where she volunteered to run the extra-curricular “Math Counts” program for seventh and eighth grade advanced math students. Her efforts there allowed the program to flourish and grow, producing math teams that have placed in the top three in regional and state competition.

Reinert has also worked to establish the Kenai Peninsula Middle School “Math Meet,” now in its eighth year, and she mentors students with disabilities.

Reinert was nominated by Homer Middle School Principal Dave Larson, math teacher Dan Calhoun, West Homer Elementary Principal Raymond Marshall and teacher Suzanne Haines. She will receive (received) the award at Monday night’s meeting of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School Board in Homer.
