Holland America Cancels Final Port Call In Homer

Aaron Selbig

The Holland America cruise ship M/S Amsterdam has completed its 2012 “Alaskan Explorer” tour – with ports of call in Kodiak and Homer – a bit prematurely. The cruise line announced Friday that, due to a nasty weekend weather forecast, the ship would abandon plans to make a final stop in Homer and Kodiak.

Monte Davis of the Homer Chamber of Commerce says the cruise line was unwilling to take the chance of having the Amsterdam go around the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula during a heavy storm. The new plan was for the ship to travel to Prince William Sound from Anchorage to wait out the storm.

Holland America officials said in June that they would be dropping the Alaskan Explorer cruise after this year. Beginning in 2013, the Amsterdam will return to a more traditional 7-day cruise through the Inside Passage in Southeast Alaska.
