Bell Elected Chief of Staff at SPH

Aaron Selbig

Dr. William Bell

A long-time Homer physician has been elected Chief of Staff for 2013 at South Peninsula Hospital.  Dr. William Bell is a family practice physician and the medical director of Homer Medical Center.  He has been on the hospital’s medical staff for over 30 years, and replaces outgoing chief of staff, Dr. Kenneth Hahn.

Hospital spokesperson Derotha Ferraro said in a news release that Dr. Harold Smith was elected to serve as Chief of Staff Elect, and Dr. Maureen Filipek is the newly elected Secretary. All three serve in one year positions, and were elected by the hospital’s active medical staff at their last quarterly meeting.

According to a brief bio on the website for the Homer Medical Clinic, Bell has lived in Homer since 1981. He is a graduate of Stanford University and the Medical School at the University of Washington.

Bell is also well-known in Homer as the long-time coach of the Homer Mariner softball team, which won a state championship in 2006. Bell’s Lady Mariners narrowly lost last year’s state championship game against Sitka by a score of 14 to 12.
